The Syracuse University men's basketball team toppled in-state foe Buffalo on Saturday night in an exhibition contest in Buffalo, N.Y.
The 76-66 win came just over a week out from the start of the college hoops regular season, which is November 3rd.
The Orange had four players in double-figures in the win, with Tyler Betsey leading the way with 14. Donnie Freeman had 11 while Kiyan Anthony and William Kyle III each had 10. Anthony is the son of Syracuse legend and basketball Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony.
George had nine points and seven rebounds in the win, and after the game, he heaped praise upon Freeman, saying he exhibited a good patience and let the game come to him. Furthermore, he said it was nice to be out on the floor against a real opponent, trying out different lineup combinations and getting used to different groupings.
Autry said the 17 turnovers were "way too many," but he said some of that was to be expected when you try out some different combinations and floor pairings. He ultimately said he was proud of the team's effort, and he called it "gritty, but not pretty."
Autry also said the team had some really good moments defensively, but he lamented some lulls on that side of the ball. He called exhibition contests important and said they help you learn about your roster, as they help to reinforce some of the coaching points from throughout the summer.
--Syracuse went 17-for-24 at the foul line and 9-for-22 from three-point range.
--Cuse never trailed in this game, also scoring 30 points in the paint and getting 31 off the bench.
--Buffalo had just two players in double-figures, with Ezra McKenna scoring 18. Noah Batchelor had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
--The Bulls only turned it over 11 times, compared to Syracuse's 17.
--The Orange will play Division II Pace on Wednesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. The regular season will open on Nov. 3 against in-state foe Binghamton.
--The Orange won't play a major conference program until seeing Houston on Nov. 24 at the Players Era Championship.
