Syracuse wide receiver Tyshawn Russell’s season is over, and defensive tackle Rashard Perry also likely has played his final game of 2025, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said Thursday.
Speaking on ESPN Radio Syracuse in advance of the Orange’s game Saturday in Dallas against SMU, Brown said Russell will undergo season-ending surgery on an undisclosed injury. Perry has a torn bicep and also will have surgery, and Brown said the defender probably has played his final game of the season.
Russell appeared in three games, catching nine passes for 83 yards and returning two kicks for 24 yards. The Pennsylvania native spent two seasons with South Carolina before transferring to the Orange last December.
Perry, a 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman from Buffalo, played in all five games this season. He made four tackles, had a half-sack and added a fumble recovery. He has appeared in 26 games over three seasons with the Orange.
Senior safety Devin Grant also is suffering from an ankle injury, and Brown said whether Grant plays against SMU will be a game-time decision. He has missed two games.
Grant is in his second season with the Orange after transferring from Buffalo. On the season, he has 15 tackles and a pass breakup.
He entered the 2025 campaign with 33 games played over three collegiate seasons. He came in with 144 tackles (9.5 for loss), two sacks, 11 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three touchdowns and two blocked kicks.
The Orange (3-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) are looking to regroup after they were thumped by Duke in Week 5, 38-3. That loss came a week after Syracuse stunned Clemson 34-21 on the road.
For SMU (2-2), the Saturday game against Syracuse will mark its ACC season opener.
The Mustangs have beaten East Texas A&M (42-13) and Missouri State (28-10) but lost to two Power 4 opponents: Baylor (48-45 in double overtime) on Sept. 6 and TCU (35-24) on Sept. 20.
Brown, in his second season as head coach of the Orange, has an overall 13-5 record. Following his first four losses, his team won the next time out.
He will hope history repeats in Dallas.
