Texas A&M women's basketball absorbed a painful 61-60 loss to UTA on Monday at the North Shore Showcase, bringing their season record to 4-1.
The first quarter saw UTA's Kira Reynolds dominate, pouring in 10 of the Mavericks' 16 points. Meanwhile, the Aggies struggled mightily from behind the arc, attempting six three-pointers without success.
Scoring for the Maroon and White was split across five players in the second quarter, but leading scorer Ny'Ceara Pryor, who averages 17 points per game, was limited to just five points by halftime.
At the break, the Aggies were shooting just 32 percent on field goals and were a dismal 0 for 13 from three-point range, trailing the Mavericks, who were shooting 41 percent.
The second half brought major adjustments.
Fatsmata Janneh, who only had three points in the first half, ignited the offense with six points in the third quarter. The most significant shift came from Jordan Webster, who exploded for 11 points in the second half after being held scoreless in the first, tying the game at 50-50 heading into the final quarter.
Texas A&M carried that momentum into the fourth, scoring five quick points with help from Janae Kent and Webster.
However, the end of the quarter turned into a rocky affair for both teams as baskets became hard to find, keeping the score tight.
The game came down to the final 13 seconds, with the Aggies trailing by one. After sending the Mavericks to the free-throw line, A&M was fortunate to see two misses, but failed to secure the crucial rebound, which led to a devastating, last-second layup for UTA.
Despite the loss, three Aggies finished with 11 points: Ny'Ceara Pryor, Janae Kent, and Jordan Webster. A&M will finish out the North Shore Showcase with a matchup versus Colorado on Tuesday.
