The Texas Longhorns women's basketball team continued its blistering start to the season on Sunday, overwhelming Texas Southern 111-45 at the Moody Center in a performance that showcased depth, intensity, and the defensive identity Vic Schaefer demands.
With just one game left before a marquee clash against UCLA, the Longhorns used this matchup exactly as intended, sharpening their strengths and flexing their considerable firepower.
From the opening tip, Texas smothered the Tigers with relentless pressure.
The Longhorns forced 33 turnovers, turned defense into instant offense, and never allowed more than 15 points in any quarter. The third quarter was pure domination, with Texas Southern managing just eight points as UT tightened the screws even further.
"I'm proud of our kids," Schaefer said. "I thought we played really hard defensively early in the press, turned them over quite a bit. Our transition was really good today, and you had some people that did some really good things."
Two of those players were standouts in every sense.
Forward Teya Sidberry put together a flawless shooting day, going 6-for-6 from the field and finishing with 18 points, while making her presence felt on both ends.
Freshman guard Aaliyah Crump matched her with 18 points of her own on an efficient 7-for-11 performance, continuing to look more comfortable with each outing.
Crump credited the veterans around her for the seamless transition. "I give it all to my teammates and my coaches who really empower me on the floor," she said. "I couldn't do it without my teammates… that's where the confidence comes from."
The only blemish on an otherwise complete performance came at the free-throw line. Texas went just 24-of-40 (60 percent), an area Schaefer has openly labeled a concern — and one that must improve when the competition stiffens.
Still, the runaway win served its purpose ... development, momentum, and another confidence boost ahead of a crucial stretch.
Texas returns to action Wednesday at home against James Madison before heading into its highly anticipated battle with UCLA.
If Sunday was any indication, this Longhorns team is locked in, hungry, and only getting better.
