After falling out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll after its loss to the Florida Gators, Texas football rejoins the rankings at 21 after its resounding 23-6 win over arch-rivals No. 14 Oklahoma.
The Sooners were undefeated and ranked sixth before their loss to the Longhorns. Defeating a team with that resume gave voters no choice but to place Texas back in the poll.
In fact, some may argue the Longhorns deserve to be higher.
Notre Dame also has two losses on its record, and yet, it's ranked eight spots ahead of Texas, despite not having a ranked victory. You could also make the case for the Longhorns over a few of the one-loss teams in front of them.
But, at the end of the day, these rankings mean next to nothing in terms of the end goal, which is making the College Football Playoff, so Texas fans shouldn't lose too much sleep over its spot in the poll.
The Longhorns have earned the right to celebrate, but after that, it's time to get straight back to work, because their schedule is still full of landmines. Texas A&M's rise continues to be an eyesore for Texas fans as its rivals have climbed all the way to No. 4 in the country.
But it's not just the Aggies it has to worry about.
Before the Lone Star Showdown, Texas has two top 25 opponents on the schedule to worry about. No. 17 Vanderbilt, led by star senior quarterback Diego Pavia, will be in town on Nov. 1, trying to knock off the Longhorns.
After that, it's a trip to Athens, Georgia, for Texas, which will be looking for revenge after the Bulldogs got the best of them in both of their matchups last season. Georgia hasn't looked as dominant as they have in the past, but it will always be a nightmare to face, especially at Sanford Stadium.
The good news is that these games, while they're tough, also provide an opportunity for those oh so valuable resume-boosting wins. You never know, a win at Georgia could prove to be the difference in making or missing the playoff.
Being back in the rankings also comes with added pressure and expectations. The next two weeks, the Longhorns travel to unranked opponents Kentucky and Mississippi State. That 21 next to Texas' name will only give those squads added motivation to pull off an upset in front of its home fans.
These are massive trap games for the Longhorns, and it'll be interesting to see how they handle them.
