It's no secret that college football is having the wildest coaching carousel that it has had in years... maybe, in history.
The most recent domino to fall was the dismissal of head coach Hugh Freeze from Auburn University following another tough year for the Tigers. In the past few months, other major coaching vacancies have opened up across the nation, most notably in the Southeastern Conference: the LSU Tigers terminated Brian Kelly, Billy Napier is out as the head coach of the Florida Gators and Sam Pittman is long gone from his spot with the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Tulane Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall has seen his name floated around quite a bit as he continues to rise in the coaching ranks. Sumrall has been with the Green Wave for just under two seasons, but his ability to compete at every level and successfully recruit both high schoolers and transfer portal players, makes him one of the most highly sought-after Group of Five coaches in the country.
Interestingly enough, according to one expert, Sumrall could be the top candidate for the Auburn job. SEC analyst Michael Bratton made the prediction on "The Paul Finebaum Show" before Freeze was even shown the door.
"I think Jon Sumrall is the perfect next Auburn coach," Bratton said. "Jon Sumrall from Tulane will be the next Auburn coach, and Auburn will make the College Football Playoff in 2026 if they wise up and get a coach down there that's actually qualified to coach in this conference."
Given Sumrall's background, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he attempted to make things work with the Tigers. He's a Huntsville, Alabama, native and found plenty of success in the Yellowhammer State as the former head coach of the Troy Trojans -- the stop he made prior to joining the Green Wave.
However, that's not where Sumrall's links to the SEC end. He's currently considered a top candidate to stay in Louisiana as the head coach of LSU Tigers. When asked about this potential link ahead of the Green Wave's matchup against the UTSA Roadrunners, Sumrall was adamant that he was still focused on his current team.
"There’s no distractions," Sumrall explained. "Like, I’m all-in to Tulane. I’m so focused on this team. The only team I’m coaching is Tulane, and I could not be more blessed to do it. I do it with great people, at a great place and a place I love to live, and I’m excited about what I’m doing."
While Auburn and LSU seem to be the most likely schools to land Sumrall -- if he decides to leave Tulane -- things can change quickly. Both programs might lose interest, and another might jump at the opportunity. In the end, all this noise could be for nothing, and Sumrall could still be sporting the olive green and sky blue this time next year.
Regardless, the only thing that matters at the moment is the Green Wave's push for an unforgettable season. There's still plenty of work to be done to make that a reality, but its still very much on the table.
