In a massive 23-3 season-opening victory over the Northwestern Wildcats, the Tulane Green Wave proved they have no shortage of talent eager to make a statement.

The narrative heading into head coach Jon Sumrall’s second season at the helm in New Orleans, La., was one of uncertainty and mystery surrounding a plethora of positions, including the major unknown at quarterback.

However, that quarrel was short-lived once the Green Wave stepped on the gridiron at Yulman Stadium last Saturday.

BYU Cougars transfer Jake Retzlaff quickly established himself as the guy for Sumrall’s 2025 squad, as he torched the Wildcats' defense for 152 passing yards and one touchdown, while also carrying the ball 10 times for 113 yards and one touchdown on the ground. 

Retzlaff also had a potential top-target emerge in the win over Northwestern, as former FAU Owls wideout Omari Hayes hauled in nine receptions for 74 yards in his first game in the Olive and Blue. 

Arguably, the most impressive aspect of the program’s performance in Week 1 came from the Green Wave’s defensive unit, which combined for three sacks, four interceptions and one forced fumble.

Tulane lost eight defensive starters heading into the 2025 campaign.

Still, Sumrall hit the portal during the offseason to bring in promising talent like Appalachian State defensive lineman Santana Hopper, who caused chaos for the Wildcats' offensive line.

Before Sumrall and company march onto the field in Mobile, Al., to face the South Alabama Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday for the second game of the season, here are the top five producers from Tulane’s season-opening victory over Northwestern in New Orleans. 

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff

• Went 18/31 for 152 passing yards and one touchdown through the air, with a QBR of 109.9.

• Rushed for 113 yards on 10 carries and scored one rushing touchdown.

Wide Receiver Omari Hayes

• Hauled in nine receptions for 74 yards, averaging 8.2 yards per reception.

Tight End Justyn Reid

• Caught three passes for 47 yards and one score, while averaging 15.7 yards per reception.

Defensive Back Jahiem Johnson

• Secured three total tackles (two solo), four pass deflections and one interception returned for 11 yards. 

Safety Jack Tchienchou

• Led the Green Wave defense with eight total tackles (six solo) and one sack for a loss of 11 yards.
