Does the UConn women’s basketball team have any holes, any areas other teams can expose?
If they do, opponents have yet to find them.
UConn won again Wednesday night, defeating Loyola Chicago 85-31 at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. They moved to 3-0, while the Ramblers fell to 1-2.
The Huskies looked like the defending national champion, dominating Loyola in every statistical category. Their swarming defense gets the credit.
UConn dropped in 37 field goals on 48% shooting, compared to nine baskets (22%). The Huskies outrebounded the Ramblers 41 to 30, and they forced 36 turnovers that resulted in 45 points.
The Huskies stole the ball 25 times and registered 27 assists to seven for Loyola.
UConn’s 41-14 halftime lead allowed head coach Geno Auriemma to play his bench liberally in the second half. Standouts Sarah Strong and Serah Williams played just six minutes in the half, with Azzi Fudd in for just seven minutes.
None of those minutes came in the fourth quarter.
Loyola opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Alexa Kinas, who led the Ramblers with seven points. UConn then went on a 23-0 run to end the quarter with a 64-17 lead.
The bench accounted for 36 points, including nine from Allie Ziebell. KK Arnold led the Huskies with 11 points and five rebounds. Jana El Alfy recorded a game-high nine rebounds.
Despite the embarrassment of riches when it came to points, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said his team is not a finished product on offense.
"I'm not exactly thrilled with where we our offensively right now,” Auriemma said about UConn's offense. “So much of our offense is coming from our defense.”
The defense, he said, “is the reason why we’ve been doing what we’ve been doing these first three games.”
Of the Huskies' three early season victories, two have come against Power Four teams: then-No. 20 Louisville and Florida State, both from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
UConn will play its next three games in Connecticut against power-conference teams: Ohio State (Sunday), No. 14 Michigan (Nov. 21) and Utah (Nov. 23).
Chances are their coaches will watch a lot of film, trying to find that one hole.
