The University of Connecticut men's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a convincing 110-47 win over UMass-Lowell on Friday night at PeoplesBank Area in Hartford, Ct.
Here's what you need to know:
All five Connecticut starters turned in double-digit scoring performances, as Tarris Reed Jr. led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Silas Demary Jr. put in 16 points while dishing out seven assists and Solo Ball had 14 points and five rebounds.
Alex Karaban added 13 points and Jaylin Stewart had 10.
UConn got 37 points off the bench in the victory as Malachi Smith had 14 and Eric Reibe had 11 points and five rebounds.
--The UConn defense was stifling, as it held UMass-Lowell to just 21.3 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from three (4-of-14)
--The Riverhawks had just four assists on the contest while committing 21 turnovers. UConn scored 30 points off those turnovers which helped fuel the blowout.
--Connecticut had a whopping 62 points in the paint versus just 12 for the visitors.
--UConn was up 64-17 at the half. The 47-point halftime lead is the largest halftime lead in program history.
--The Huskies shot 60.9 percent from the floor and a solid-enough 39.1 percent from three.
The biggest takeaway from this one is that everyone was healthy enough to play and contribute. Connecticut is already without uber-talented freshman Braylon Mullins because of an ankle injury and they had some preseason concerns about Demary, who missed the Oct. 13th exhibition contest with a calf issue. Reed missed that same game, so having everyone but Mullins remain available in this one is a big deal for Dan Hurley's squad moving forward.
While Connecticut dominated this game, it's still jarring to see that they allowed UMass-Lowell to attempt 32 free throws versus their own 22. As the contests get more competitive, UConn will not want to be -10 in free throws attempted.
Beyond that, the Huskies could stand to be a little better from beyond the arc. The 39.1 percent figure is solid, but in a game like this, 40 percent or better would have been a nice accomplishment. The bench players were just 3-of-9 from distance.
The No. 4 Huskies will take on Columbia of the Ivy League on Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will air nationally on FS1. They'll get No. 8 BYU on Nov. 15.
