With the NFL trade deadline approaching, teams are beginning to weigh their options.
This year's deadline is on Nov. 4, and some predictions have started to be made about which players will be traded and to what teams. The Chicago Bears received an interesting trade prediction recently.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler believed that the New York Jets could trade edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II. Johnson's salary for 2026 is $13.4 million as a part of his fifth-year option, and Fowler thinks the team would be more likely to move on from Johnson than Will McDonald IV.
Fowler's team fits for Johnson? The Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. Fowler had the likelihood of Johnson being traded at 35%.
"The Jets are not desperate to trade Johnson; good edge rushers are hard to find, and his $13.4 million salary for 2026 (a fifth-year option) is reasonable," Fowler said. "But my sense after asking around is that New York would be more willing to part with Johnson than Will McDonald IV if it made any move at the position. Macdonald is in the third year of his rookie deal, whereas Johnson is in his fourth. And Johnson has garnered a bit of interest thus far."
Chicago could definitely use some help in pressuring the quarterback, with the Bears ranking No. 24 in the NFL in sacks with 12 heading into Week 8.
One area that the Bears have had plenty of success, however, is forcing turnovers. Chicago leads the NFL with 16 turnovers after forcing four of them in the 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Johnson has been in the league for a short amount of time, but has proven that he is a solid edge rusher. He was drafted 26th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He also spent two seasons at Georgia and was featured in the Netflix show "Last Chance U" in 2017 and 2018, attending Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas.
In his one season at Florida State, he accounted for 70 total tackles, 12 sacks and 18 tackles for loss.
He is now in his fourth NFL season, recording 103 total tackles, 11 sacks and 16 tackles for loss. His best season was in 2023, when he was voted to the Pro Bowl and after having 7.5 sacks, 55 total tackles and 11 tackles for loss.
This will be something to keep an eye on as the trade deadline keeps getting closer and closer.
