Caleb Williams came under fire for his interception during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Bears' offense was pinned inside their own five-yard line and Williams threw the interception while looking for Rome Odunze. This marked a turning point in the game for Baltimore, as they scored in two plays and made 23-13.
Chicago managed only three more points in the game, as the Ravens ended any chance of a comeback with a two-yard Derrick Henry rushing touchdown.
Williams hasn't been perfect, throwing for 1,636 passing yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions. However, he continues to make plays in crunch time, when it's needed the most.
The Chicago quarterback leads the league in passer rating on third and fourth down with 4-12 yards to go at 144.8.
While the team still has a way to go to achieve its season goals, this is an excellent sign for a young quarterback in the NFL.
Can he make the big plays under pressure in the biggest moments? While the team is 4-3, it sounds like Williams is already maturing faster than anticipated.
Head coach Ben Johnson said it himself on a recent appearance with "Carmen on Jurko" on ESPN1000. Johnson noted how impressed he was with Williams' growth this season. Johnson argued that Williams played his best football in the last two games against the Ravens.
“He played better this game than I think he had the previous two," Johnson said. "When you look at it, all 60 minutes, and I’m not saying it’s perfect. I actually came away from watching the tape this morning, encouraged that we took a step in the right direction here this week. I know for some people it’s hard to rationalize because the result wasn’t there. But yeah, I saw tangible growth from him. He’s working his a— off.”
The former No. 1 overall continues to improve, which is what you want to see. He already showed signs during his rookie season, throwing for 3,541 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Hopefully, with more consistency at head coach, that growth will continue.
Williams and the Bears head to Paycor Stadium to face the 3-4 Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday. The Bengals lost a heartbreaker to the New York Jets 39-38 in Week 8. However, Joe Flacco has been solid, throwing for 784 passing yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions.
We'll see which quarterback can outduel the other at noon CT on CBS.
