Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams went to the podium after the team's 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
The talk of the game was the great job by the rushing attack, with Chicago going for 222 rushing yards as a team. D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai led the way, combining for 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The defense was able to continue its success in taking the ball away, ending with four turnovers.
While the fourth win in a row was great, Williams realized that he still has some room to grow and that he didn't play his best in the game. He finished with 172 passing yards, one interception and completed 15 of his 26 passing attempts.
"I threw an interception today," Williams said. "The defense had four turnovers, four sacks. I threw an interception, I didn't play well today. The offensive line pushes us through. D'Andre Swift and the backs push us through for 200-plus yards on the ground. It's being able to find ways to win, and we're gonna keep doing that. But it's also about being able to find ways to come together as one, so that when defense has a turnover, we go down and put seven on the board, not a field goal. That accounts for me, that accounts for all of us on the offense."
Where Williams was especially annoyed when it came to what he needs to work on was success when he runs outside of the pocket. He acknowledged that he needs to be better at creating explosive plays, while being confident that they will eventually come.
At the end of the day, he believed improving comes down to working on the basics of throwing the ball.
"I am gonna figure this out, especially with some of these explosive plays," Williams said. "Mainly talking about the on-the-run stuff. I haven't been efficient with those. I haven't been hitting them. It's frustrating. I'm gonna figure this out. We're gonna figure this out. When we start hitting on some of those cylinders, when we start having some of those explosive plays, especially when the play breaks and it turns into our second play, it's gonna be real devastating to the other side. ...Other than that, it just comes down to the basics. Feet, eyes, then delivering a good ball to the guys."
Being able to put some of the blame on yourself, whether in a win or a loss, is a good sign of how mature you are as a quarterback. While Williams by no means had his best game, it's promising that the team was still able to perform well despite that.
