Comparing their starts, Caleb Williams' early success with Ben Johnson surprisingly rivals Jared Goff's, with crucial statistical edges and winning the Bears games.

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has been in the NFL since 2012, but was not a head coach until this season.

He started his NFL tenure with the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant. He was with Miami from 2012 to 2018, serving in various assistant roles, before joining the Detroit Lions in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach.

He worked his way up through the ranks in Detroit, eventually landing the offensive coordinator job in 2022.  During his time as offensive coordinator, he worked with quarterback Jared Goff.

However, on a recent episode of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," Colin Cowherd argued that Caleb Williams was better with Johnson in his first six games than the Bears head coach was with Goff.

"It is interesting," Cowherd said. "Ben Johnson, when he was in Detroit, was with Jared Goff. And this morning, we went and looked at Ben Johnson's first six games with Caleb Williams, and his first six games with Jared Goff. You know what you see? Identical numbers. Caleb just wins more. Three things are pretty clear. There's clear progress with Caleb Williams and the Bears' offense this year compared to last."

If you go back and look at the numbers for Goff and Williams under Johnson in their first six games together, it is very similar.

Goff had 1,583 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions, while Williams has 1,351 passing yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Goff's passer rating was 90.6, while Williams' is 92.9.

As Cowherd said, the only major difference was that the Bears are 4-2. The Lions during that span in 2022 were 1-5.

Another area that stood out Cowherd were the sacks numbers. Williams has taken 11 sacks, while Goff had 12 in the first six games.

"Here are facts about Caleb Williams and the Bears, and Ben Johnson through six games," Cowherd said. "These are facts, looked it up this morning. He is taking far fewer sacks. That was my number one concern. Not yards, not touchdowns. He's taking fewer sacks. He has a higher passer rating. And the Bears lead the NFL in big plays per game. It is working. It is absolutely working."

Goff has been in the league much longer than Williams has, but things are trending in the right direction for the second-year quarterback. Williams and Chicago take on the Baltimore Ravens on the road this Sunday at noon CT on CBS.
