Things are really starting to trend upwards for the Chicago Bears under head coach Ben Johnson.
The Bears are now 4-2 after beating the New Orleans Saints 26-14 on Sunday at Soldier Field. Chicago has now won four games in a row after opening the year with two losses.
Even in the two losses, Johnson's offense has been consistent. The Bears are averaging 25.3 points per game heading into Week 8 of the 2025 season.
The last time the Bears were able to score over 25 points per game was the 2018 season. It was also the last time that the team led the league in turnovers (16) and won four games in a row.
Chicago's defense was second in turnovers forced heading into Week 7 with 12, only trailing the Jacksonville Jaguars, who had 14. The Bears forced three interceptions and one fumble versus the Saints, while the Jaguars defense didn't have any, putting Chicago in the lead.
If the team does end up having a season similar to 2018, I don't think the fans would mind. That season the Bears went 12-4 with Mitch Trubisky under center and clinched the NFC North.
However, if it ends like that season did for Chicago, that would be a different story. That year was the year of the infamous "double doink" from kicker Cody Parkey in the NFC Wild Card against the Philadelphia Eagles. The ball hit the field goal post twice in the Bears' attempt at a go-ahead field goal with 10 seconds left.
As fans in the Windy City know well, the field goal didn't go in after hitting the post two times, and the Bears lost to the Eagles 16-15. Philadelphia advanced to the next round, but lost to the Saints 20-14.
Since that fateful field goal miss, Chicago has been to the playoffs once, returning to the postseason under 2020. However, the Bears didn't go very far and lost to the Saints in the NFC Wild Card 21-9.
Regardless of how things went in 2018, Johnson deserves all the praise in the world for the turnaround that he has been able to do in Chicago. The Bears are right in the middle of the race for the NFC North and face some favorable foes next.
Chicago goes on the road again in its next two games to face the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals. Next Sunday's game against Baltimore kicks off at noon CT on CBS.
