Coach Ben Johnson publicly addresses Theo Bendet's inconsistent performance, challenging the guard to elevate his game for the Chicago Bears.

While things are good for the Chicago Bears, they are far from a perfect team heading into Week 8.

The Bears are 4-2 and fresh off a 26-14 win over the New Orleans at Soldier Field. However, there are definitely still things that can be cleaned up. For example, Caleb Williams struggled against the one-win Saints, finishing with 172 passing yards and one interception on 15-of-26 completed passes.

Head coach Ben Johnson went to the podium and challenged one of the team's newer players. He stated that the play from offensive tackle Theo Bendet could definitely be better.

"It's inconsistent to say the least." Johnson said.

Benedet was not born in the United States of America, instead he grew up in Ontario, Canada. He played high school football at Handsworth Secondary School. After his high school days, he played college football at the University of British Columbia from 2019-2023, where he was a two-time First-Team All-Canadian.

He also took home the J.P. Metras trophy twice in college, which goes annually to the best offensive lineman in Canadian college football.

After his college days, he had a decision to make. He went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft but was a second-round draft pick in the CFL Draft that year. Despite being drafted by the BC Lions, he opted for the NFL and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bears.

His playing time with Chicago in 2024 was minimal, but he has seen an uptick this season. Benedet has played in six games with three starts.

Benedet played left tackle on Sunday and went against Saints edge rusher Chase Young. Johnson stated that Benedet let up a couple of false starts and could have looked better in pass blocking.

"You know, he had a couple false starts mixed in there," Johnson said. "Run-game wise, he did some good things in terms of moving guys, but probably wasn't as clean as it could be. And then in pass pro, I think (Saints DE) Chase Young got after him just a little bit more than he had liked, as well.”

Benedet's struggles this season weren't just in Sunday's game. He had an illegal formation penalty that wiped out a Rome Odunze touchdown in the 25-24 win over the Washington Commanders. He lined up too far behind the center, and the referees threw the flag.

While Benedet has had his struggles, he has shown some bright spots, too. He is still breaking into the NFL and is just in his second year in the league. Things will need to get better, however, as he will have to face more edge rushers like Young.

Based on Johnson's comments, it'll be interesting to see where he decides to put Benedet in the future or if left tackle is where he'll reside for the time being.

We will have to wait and see where he lines up against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at noon CT on CBS.
