The Chicago Bears are 4-2, and while it is a great start to the Ben Johnson, it's eerily familiar to how the 2024 season was.
The Bears had the same start under former head coach Matt Eberflus last season, but things went off the rails fast. Chicago ultimately won one more game that season and ended the year at 5-12. Eberflus was fired after the 34-17 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
Safety Jaquan Brisker has been the Bears since 2022 and lived through the rough 2024 season. He went to the podium and explained why this time things will be different. He believes that the team in a much better when it comes to the relationships on and off the field under Johnson.
"This 4-2, we're on a four-game winning streak," Brisker said. "We have a different coaching staff, a couple different players on offense, defense and special teams. We're closer. We're actually closer as players and player-coach, I'll say that too. I'll say we're on one line. Everybody is on the same type of level. So, I feel like that's different. Then creating turnovers and things like that. We're feeding off each other, special teams, offense, defense."
Brisker is right about the defense's success in forcing turnovers, as the Bears currently lead the NFL with 16 following the four they forced in Sunday's 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints.
The offense had its struggles early in the season, but is starting to find rhythm, especially in the running game. Running back D'Andre Swift has put together two consecutive 100-yard rushing performances and rookie Kyle Monangai had 81 yards on the ground as well on Sunday. Chicago is averaging the eighth-most rushing yards per game, with 129.3.
Improvements can be made in the passing department, as Chicago ranks 16th in passing yards per game, at 229.7. Quarterback Caleb Williams struggled against the Saints, finishing with 172 passing yards and one interception on 15-of-26 completed passes.
Brisker was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He is currently fourth on the Bears in interceptions (1) heading into Week 8. Fellow safety Kevin Byard leads the team with four.
Chicago moves on to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8 on the road. The game will be live from M&T Bank Stadium at noon CT on CBS as the team tries to win five straight.
