The Chicago Bears are loving what they are seeing from inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds so far, especially head coach Ben Johnson.
Edmunds is in his third season with the Bears and has carved out a role for himself at the Will position in Chicago's linebacker room. He currently has 61 total tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss.
He set a career high in total tackles in 2018 as a rookie, and he is on pace to break that if he continues his production. Johnson credited Edmunds for the solid start he's had so far at Wednesday's press conference.
Johnson noted how crucial that it was for both Edmunds and TJ Edwards to learn both the Mike and Will positions at linebacker during the spring and fall. The head coach believes that because of the transition, both players are more comfortable and are able to play free and fast.
"We loaded up both him and TJ up in the springtime in camp, and both of them learned both Will and Mike, and I think Richard Smith's done a phenomenal job with it," Johnson said. "That was kind of the plan all along, that they can get experience in both those spots, the faster they'll end up playing. It might not feel comfortable at the time, and it wasn't comfortable. There were a lot of growing pains there in the spring and during camp. But now that we've gotten to this point and we feel pretty good about having TJ at the Mike spot and Tremaine at the Will, and I think he's really settled down there as well."
Before heading to Chicago, Edmunds spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills from 2018-2022.
While Edmunds is not a novice anymore by any means, Johnson mentioned how the confidence level of the linebacker has increased since camp. Johnson also brought up how Edmunds' wingspan is very helpful is pass coverage.
"So, I think you're seeing a guy that's playing fast," Johnson said. "He's playing confident. I'm seeing him downhill and attack blocks in the run game. He's pulling guys off double teams on a regular basis. Then, when it comes to the coverage game, he's always been a guy you got to account for just because of how long he is. You get the ball, you're trying to fit in a tight window in the zones, and he's just so darn long, his arm's going to knock it down or tip it up, and you got a problem if you're on offense."
His wingspan has translated to interceptions this season, as he has recorded three thus far. If he records two more interceptions he will break his career high, which is four in 2023. He is also approaching new career highs in sacks (2, 2018) and tackles for loss (10, 2019).
If he keeps this up, it'll be hard to keep Edmunds out of Pro Bowl voting. He has made the Pro Bowl twice in his NFL career, in 2019 and 2020.
