Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott has dropped a rather murky injury update on the team's top draft pick.

The Buffalo Bills selected cornerback Maxwell Hairston with the 30th overall pick of the NFL Draft back in April, hoping the University of Kentucky product would bolster their ailing secondary.

Unfortunately, Hairston hasn't even gotten the chance to do that just yet, as he began his rookie campaign on the injured reserve list as a result of an LCL sprain he suffered in training camp back in late July.

Hairston didn't tear any ligaments, which was obviously a major plus, but his timetable has been rather foggy.

Well, Bills coach Sean McDermott provided an update on his top draft choice this week, and he didn't sound overly optimistic concerning Hairston's chances of returning soon.

"He's working, that's what I can tell you, he's working and moving in the right direction. We'll see, I don't know how many weeks it'll be," McDermott told reporters. "So right now, it's, I think lowering expectations and managing them and just taking it one day at a time and seeing when and if he can come back."

That doesn't sound like a coach who is expecting his player to hit the field in the near future. In fact, McDermott made it pretty clear that he isn't even sure if Hairston will play at all in 2025.

Hairston rocketed up draft boards rather late in the draft process and is definitely one of the most intriguing defenders from the class.

The 22-year-old put himself on the map during his sophomore campaign at Kentucky in 2023, racking up 68 tackles, five interceptions, six passes defended and a couple of defensive touchdowns. He then missed five games during his final season with the Wildcats due to a shoulder injury, but in the seven contests in which he did play, he logged 19 tackles, a pick (which he returned for a score), two forced fumbles and four passes defended.

Buffalo's pass defense ranked 24th in the NFL last season. It is currently No. 2 in the league through three weeks, but that's a small sample size, and it's clear that the Bills have issues at cornerback.

Hopefully, Hairston can get back on the field and help solve them, but there is no guarantee that happens this year.
