The Denver Broncos didn’t play a good game in their 13-11 Week 6 win over the 0-6 New York Jets in London.
It was probably the worst game played in Week 6, and even though the offense looked disastrous against a weak Jets defense, they found a way to get the job done.
Quarterback Bo Nix completed 19 of 30 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown, running back J.K. Dobbins had just 40 rushing yards on 14 carries and tight end Evan Engram led the team in receiving with just five catches for 42 yards.
Denver had to rely on its star-studded defense that has been one of the best units in the National Football League for the last couple of seasons, and they were fantastic.
Denver sacked Jets QB Justin Fields nine times and held him to just 45 passing yards on 17 passing attempts and 31 rushing yards on seven attempts. Fields had -10 net passing yards, the worst mark in Jets history and the worst mark this century.
While the offense isn’t where Head Coach Sean Payton would like it to be, it certainly is uplifting to have a top defense that can make up for offensive misfortune.
“Payton's offensive résumé was a big part of why he was hired in 2023, but the Broncos are 4-2 because of a defense that leads the league in sacks (30), defensive expected points added (31.43) and opposing QBR (43.5),” ESPN’s Jeff Legwold wrote Tuesday. “Cornerback Pat Surtain II continues to vex the league's top receivers, and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto is tied for the NFL lead in sacks (seven). Denver pressures across the defensive front and has the secondary depth to play any nickel or dime variations. The Broncos' aggression has surrendered a big play or two -- see Weeks 2 and 3 -- but they have overcome their bobbles on offense and special teams with a playoff-worthy defense.”
Pat Surtain II and the Broncos will host the 2-4 New York Giants fresh off a 17-point victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. The new-look Giants, led by rookie QB Jaxson Dart, have looked like a much different team since swapping Dart for veteran QB Russell Wilson.
Denver’s biggest task will be stopping Dart on the ground as well as containing rookie running back Cam Skattebo both on the ground and in the air.
