Johnny Manziel clearly does not have much love for the Cleveland Browns. In fact, he has openly admitted that he hates them. Why? Because of his failed two-year stint in Cleveland between 2014 and 2015 that ultimately resulted in Manziel finding himself out of the league.
The former first-round pick has placed most of the blame on the Browns for his NFL flameout, but legendary Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas — who was Manziel's teammate during those two years — sees it a different way.
“He is very delusional about whose fault it is," Thomas said on 98.3 the Fan. "... He was not able to be successful because he did it to himself. He was not responsible, he was not mature, he was not professional."
Manziel endured a myriad of off-the-field problems throughout his brief NFL tenure, which was absolutely the primary cause of his collapse. Did Cleveland do a great job grooming him? Not necessarily, and it's not like the Browns have a sparkling track record with quarterbacks. But Manziel is a special case.
There is a reason why no other NFL team gave Manziel a chance after Cleveland. No one was willing to take on that potential headache, so it's about time that Manziel — who has expressed some regret over his actions as a youngster — accepts some accountability and understands that he was the main reason for his own downfall.
Manziel made 14 appearances and eight starts during his time with the Browns, throwing for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 57.8 percent of his passes. That isn't good no matter how you slice it.
Thomas said that Manziel is "still a friend," but that he "can't come to terms with the fact that he screwed it up" and "he needs somebody to blame."
The Hall-of-Fame lineman could not have said it any better. Manziel boasted significant talent, which he displayed when he captured the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M. But his lack of maturity and focus absolutely cost him what could have been a very fruitful NFL career.
Funny enough, Manziel is still just 32 years old, so it's not even like he's old at this point. He still could have been playing today had he handled himself correctly. But nevertheless, here we are.
