When the Cleveland Browns selected Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, they brought in a player with a lot of media coverage surrounding him.
Being the son of the legendary Deion Sanders is part of the media coverage that follows him. His flashy play is another. Finally, the fact that he has a very productive quarterback during his college career is yet another reason for the hype that he has.
Immediately after he was drafted, the conversation started about whether or not he would win the starting job for the Browns. That was never likely, but many have expected that he will see the field at some point during the 2025 season.
Even though it can't be ruled out that Sanders could see the field this season, it doesn't seem likely.
According to a new report from NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Sanders is not expected to see the field this season barring an unforeseen circumstance.
"However, don’t plan on seeing the fifth-round rookie on the field this season unless things get really weird," Russini wrote. "Cleveland believes in Joe Flacco’s experience and Dillon Gabriel’s development as the backup."
Of course, Joe Flacco has been named the Week 1 starting quarterback for Cleveland. Fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel will begin the year as the backup. The Browns seem very set with that projected depth chart.
Anything can happen in the NFL. An injury could occur, or Gabriel could struggle if his number is called. Plenty of paths could lead to Sanders playing.
However, that is not currently in the plans for Cleveland. That alone is disappointing for the former Colorado Buffaloes' standout.
Throughout his four-year college career split between Colorado and Jackson State, Sanders put up big numbers. He completed 70.1 percent of his pass attempts for 14,347 yards, 134 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions. Those numbers made many project him to be a first or second-round pick.
Despite the start of his NFL career not being exactly what he had hoped, Sanders has remained professional. He has been a good teammate and a hard worker. The Browns could not ask for him to handle things better.
Expect to continue hearing calls for Cleveland to play Sanders. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but the Browns are not planning for that to be the case in 2025.
Regardless, fans can bet that Sanders will be ready and waiting if his numbers is called this year.
