One day after trading Joe Flacco, the Cleveland Browns complete another trade involving veteran cornerback Greg Newsome

Four weeks out from the NFL's trade deadline, the Cleveland Browns appear to be very much open for business.

For a second consecutive day, Browns' Vice President of Football Operations Andrew Berry swung a notable trade. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Berry is sending cornerback Greg Newesome to the Jacksonville Jaguars along with a sixth-round pick, in exchange for CB Tyson Campbell and a seventh-round pick.

Newsome represents the second first-round selection Berry made since he joined the Browns organization in 2020. The Northwestern product was playing on the final year of his rookie deal and was playing his way into a major extension this offseason with how well he was playing over the first five weeks of the season.

Clearly, Cleveland didn't view Newsome as part of their future plans beyond this season. The deal also has some notable cap implications for the Browns with Newsome on the books for a fully-guaranteed $13.3 million fifth-year option. His deal is one one of the only ones that comes with zero dead cap implications for the Browns to absorb.

In the meantime, Campbell joins the fold as an immediate replacement for Newsome. A 2021, second-round pick, Campbell was selected by Jacksonville just seven picks after Newsome was selected by Cleveland.

The Georgia product has been a five year starter for the Jags since then, as he's played in 60 games during that span. He's snagged six interceptions – all of them coming in his first three seasons in the league – forced three fumbles and broken up 42 passes.

Campbell just signed a four-year, $76.5 million extension with the Jaguars last offseason and will count less than $3 million on the Browns cap this year. Next year, an option bonus that has already been guaranteed as of March of 2025, will kick in as well, but is spread out over the remaining years of the deal, keeping the 2026 cap number very manageable .

By 2027 his base salary jumps to $15 million, but the Browns essentially has a two-year runway to determine if Campbell can bounce back from a bit off a drop off in his play and be worth those bigger figures in the later years of the deal.
