Here's why the Cleveland Browns' recent acquisition of Houston Texans' offensive lineman Cam Robinson will not help the franchise's struggles up front.

As the Cleveland Browns head into week five of the 2025 NFL season with a 1-3 record, there has been plenty of issues that have plagued the franchise this year.

One of the key issues that has resulted in the poor start for Cleveland is the offensive line play thus far, with the front line of protection for the quarterback giving up nine sacks in the Browns’ first four games. And while many believed that the offensive line play would make great strides under head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offensive scheme, it’s clear that the unit needs a complete overhaul in the future.

However, general manager Andrew Berry decided on Monday, following a crushing loss to the Detroit Lions, that the organization must start to revamp their offensive line by trading for Houston Texans’ left tackle Cam Robinson.

The former 2017 second-round pick played in one game this season prior to being traded to Cleveland, but was quickly replaced by rookie Aireontae Ersery after week one. Despite the rookie struggling in his first few games, the Texans are obviously looking to give Ersey more experience, leading to the trade of Robinson.

But even with Robinson entering his ninth year in the league, the experience may not benefit the Browns and their offensive line issues.

The 29-year-old linemen from Alabama began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars with the hope that he could eventually become a cornerstone piece for the franchise. Unfortunately for Robinson, he was unable to truly solidify himself in Jacksonville, which led to him being traded last season to the Minnesota Vikings to address their offensive line needs before making the playoffs.

During his 11-game stint in Minnesota, Robinson once again struggled to reach his full potential, as he allowed a total of 27 pressures, 19 quarterback hurries, and five sacks, according to PFF. While he remained serviceable throughout the course of the regular season last year, it was his performance in the Vikings' lone playoff game that raised multiple question marks after giving up 12 pressures and 11 quarterback hurries against the Los Angeles Rams.

Now, with the Browns’ current hole at the left tackle position due to 2023 fourth-round pick Dawand Jones suffering a season-ending injury against the Green Bay Packers in week three. But the acquisition of Robinson and the veteran tackle slated to become the starter, this singular move will not be a saving grace for Cleveland’s rough offensive line.

Instead, the Browns will have to make multiple moves next offseason to truly see better play up front. Robinson could be helpful if the team decides to start rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, but his inconsistency throughout his career suggests that he is strictly in Cleveland for this season.

Luckily for Berry, the draft-night trade that gave him the Jaguars' 2026 first-round pick could be the answer to the problems at left tackle. Oregon’s Isaiah World and Alabama’s Kadyn Proctor are two potential players that Cleveland can look for in round one, with both having plenty of experience playing left tackle in college.
