The Los Angeles Chargers travel to Nashville, Tennessee this week to take on the 1-7 Titans, but they remain pretty banged up heading into the game.
Out for the Chargers are the team's backup RB (Hassan Haskins), backup SS (Tony Jefferson) and nickel CB (Tarheeb Still). It's a good thing that Derwin James practiced in full and is fit to play because the team is running low on defensive backs.
Perhaps more worrying than either of the actual absences is Mekhi Becton being questionable after leaving the win against the Minnesota Vikings early with a knee injury. Luckily, his backup Jamaree Salyer (facing his own knee issues) practiced in full today and is ready to start at RG, if necessary.
On the other side of the ledger, the very bad Tennessee Titans are about to roll out an even worse team than usual.
Jeffery Simmons, arguably the best player on the team, is out with a hamstring injury after missing practice all week. He picked up the injury in the first half of a 31-13 New England Patriots win over the Titans two weeks ago and missed last week's 38-14 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. It can't be a great sign that the off week wasn't enough time to get him right.
Calvin Ridley, arguably the best offensive player on the team, is also out with a hamstring injury after missing practice all week. He picked up the injury in the 1st Quarter of a 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders three weeks ago. It can't be a great sign that two weeks off has not been enough time to get him right.
If Simmons is the best player on the Titans' defense, their 2nd best is pretty obviously FS Xavier Woods. He was playing last week in the Titans' game against the Colts and.....you're not going to believe this. He's out with a hamstring injury and didn't practice all week. It can't be a great sign that the Titans will be without arguably their three best players while they prepare to play the Chargers.
So, the solution for the Titans without Simmons to stop the run or Woods to cover the deep pass is to blitz and try to pressure Justin Herbert, right?
About that. Starting strongside OLB Arden Key is one-half of the outside pass rush for the Titans. It's not a particularly great pass rush to begin with, and especially without Simmons (who leads the team with 4.5 sacks), but it's likely to get even worse with Jihad Ward taking Key's place.
