Sometimes the game seems to come too easily for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, so he feels the need to toy with us. That was definitely the case yesterday, as Mahomes drew on his “acting career” as a pitchman to get a pivotal first down against the Las Vegas Raiders in a moment of hilarity we’ll all remember for a long time.
The play occurred in the second quarter, with the Chiefs facing a fourth-and-1 at their 40 with a 7-0 lead. According to a story written by Jesse Newell of The Athletic, Mahomes went into a normal hard count when everyone knew he was trying to draw the Raiders offside.
The hard count failed, of course, as it nearly always does in these situations, but Mahomes had another trick up his sleeve.
“This f—ing never f—ing works, man!” Mahomes screamed out, loud enough for the CBS microphones to pick it up clearly while analyst Tony Romo apologized for the profanity to his TV audience.
Center Creed Humphrey struggled to keep a straight face during Mahomes’ ad lib, but it took some effort.
“I kind of chuckled when he said it,” Humphrey said.
Mahomes then went full-on Hollywood on Las Vegas. He extended both palms up while turning toward the sideline as if he was angry at coach Andy Reid for trying a play that never works.
The Chiefs quarterback then called for the snap, and he handed the ball off to running back Kareem Hunt, who proceeded to get three yards for a first down.
“That,” Humphrey said after the game, “was hilarious.”
Mahomes referred to his commercials as an insurance company pitchman after the game, but the Chiefs have been known to do this before when things are going a little too well for them. That’s when the pull out the wacky motion plays or make fake mistakes to lull the defense into a state of relaxation, and Mahomes “credited” offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for this particular bit of trickery.
“I can’t remember who I watched do it a couple years ago, and they had said that (fake on the field). And so I was like, ‘I’m gonna use that as part of my acting to try to get the defense just to relax a little bit,'” Mahomes said. “But at the end of the day, we’ve just got to go get it.”
The Chiefs definitely did that and more. They bullied the hapless Raiders all day in their 31-0 shutout win, and the trick play provided a brief moment of entertainment in what was otherwise a boring, one-sided game.
