Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown walked back his controversial social media post this week, claiming that he was just frustrated and that he is still happy in Philadelphia.
Brown logged just two catches for seven yards in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday and has totaled 14 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown through four games. That isn't exactly what we have grown accustomed to seeing from the three-time Pro Bowler.
Well, former NFL MVP Cam Newton doesn't necessarily blame Brown for being irritated and thinks that the Eagles are doing a poor job of utilizing the star playmaker.
“The truth is, the play selection of how you’re using A.J. Brown is bland,” Newton said on ESPN First Take. “It is simple. It’s like, yo, put him in motion. Get him out of just this typical X receiver isolation. … We all know that Jalen Hurts is capable, but Jalen Hurts is never asked to consistently win games with his arm.”
Newton has long been a critic of Hurts, categorizing him as a "game manager" along with numerous other well-known quarterbacks such as Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott. There has also been rampant speculation that the relationship between Brown and Hurts isn't exactly simpatico, even if both players kind of say otherwise.
Brown was targeted nine times against the Buccaneers last week, but when you watch the film, you'll notice that many of the balls weren't even catchable. The Eagles also did not complete a single pass during the second half and nearly blew a three-score lead because of it.
Philadelphia initially acquired Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Tennessee Titans back in March 2022. The 28-year-old recorded back-to-back 1,400-yard campaigns to begin his Philly tenure, even garnering some MVP consideration in 2023. He then finished with 1,079 yards in 13 games last season, averaging a robust 16.1 yards per catch.
Brown is certainly not on pace to post great numbers this year, but neither is the Eagles' aerial attack in general, which ranks 30th in the NFL.
Nevertheless, Philadelphia is 4-0 and is aiming to remain undefeated when it battles the Denver Broncos this Sunday.
