    This was to be expected.

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered their first loss of the season in Week 5 at home against the Denver Broncos.

As a result, the defending Super Bowl champions dropped one spot in the new NFL.com power rankings. They went from No. 1 to No. 2.

"The Eagles held the lead from the mid-second quarter to the mid-fourth, and during that span, they turned around and handed the ball to Saquon Barkley one time, not counting plays negated by penalty. Once. Over a span of 25 plays. The Eagles now average fewer than 100 rush yards per game, and that includes what Jalen Hurts does with his legs.

"This team used to get a lead and put opponents in a sleeper hold with the run game, but no longer, it appears. Hurts and A.J. Brown also don't seem to be on the same page, missing on a few key connections, and you have to wonder what the future of this pairing is. The Eagles aren't suddenly in the toilet, but this loss underscored some of the issues that have bubbled up of late."

The Eagles are 4-1 on the season. They lead the NFC East and are tied with the Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers for first place in the NFC.

Philadelphia is averaging 25.0 points per game and giving up 21.8 points per game. The offense is still trying to get things together in the passing game. They are 31st in passing yards, as QB Jalen Hurts has only 889 passing yards.

After the Eagles lost to the Broncos, WR DeVonte Smith said the passing game needs to get better.

"We made improvements in certain areas. We still could be a lot better. Shot ourselves in the foot a lot," Smith said. "There's times where we're looking at him, and he may give a signal before or after we look, and ultimately we have to be on the same page. We have to see that signal no matter what. It was just little things within the routes. He may have seen something presnap and sometimes we didn't see it."

Hurts has not been on the same page with Smith and A.J. Brown this season. There isn't much time for the Eagles to work on things this week, as they face the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

Multiple reports have said that Smith and Brown are frustrated with the Eagles' offense. It will be interesting to see if things get better moving forward.
