The Philadelphia Eagles may be 4-1, but they clearly have some pretty serious issues that they need to sort out offensively.
The Eagles rank 30th in the league in offense after five weeks and just suffered their first loss of the season after getting outscored 18-0 in the fourth quarter by the Denver Broncos.
So, just how bad has Philadelphia been offensively? Well, Philly is in the process of making NFL history in terms of three-and-outs.
"Three-and-outs have occurred at a historically bad rate for the Eagles — a league-high 47.2 percent. It’s a small sample size of five games, but it’s the worst rate a team has had in a season in 20 years," wrote Zach Berman of The Athletic. "You have to go back to San Francisco in 2005 — a team that finished 4-12 — for a worse rate. An offense that has nine Pro Bowl-caliber starters should not be this inefficient. The next two teams on the list are Tennessee and Cincinnati."
The fact that the Eagles have truly been this horrendous on the offensive side of the ball is absolutely stunning given how much talent they have.
Last year, Philadelphia was the eighth-ranked offense in the league, thanks much in part to Saquon Barkley pacing the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards. However, he is averaging just 3.2 yards per carry this season, and he only toted the ball six times in Week 5.
Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown clearly have some type of disconnect, and DeVonta Smith even said that the quarterback and the receivers are not quite on the same page.
The Eagles did lose offensive coordinator Kellen Moore during the offseason, as Moore took the New Orleans Saints head-coaching job. They promoted passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator as a result, but Patullo has been struggling.
It can't just be Patullo's fault, though. There are obviously much more prominent issues afoot here, and Philadelphia must find a way to correct them before it's too late.
The good news is that there is still plenty of time for the Eagles to make that happen, and they will be facing the 1-4 New York Giants this Thursday.
