The Philadelphia Eagles have gotten off to a 4-0 start this season, but it certainly has not been smooth sailing for the defending Super Bowl champions. Particularly not offensively.
The Eagles' offense ranks 30th in the NFL, and in their Week 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they did not complete a single pass in the second half. Not ideal.
Philadelphia's rushing attack has flatlined this season, as well, with Saquon Barkley averaging a meager 3.1 yards per carry.
So, what exactly is going on? Is this all because of new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo? Is it a Super Bowl hangover? Are the Eagles just coasting? Or are there deeper issues here?
Well, Zoltan Buday has identified a problem that will shock you: the offensive line.
"The Eagles' offensive line has struggled to live up to expectations in 2025, even though the unit remains in the top three," Buday wrote. "Philadelphia's front-five has surrendered 40 pressures — including four sacks — on 130 pass plays. The resulting 82.3 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating ties for 24th in the league."
The fact that the Eagles' offensive line ranks 24th in any category is genuinely jarring seeing how dominant the unit has been for years running now.
After Jason Kelce retired following the 2023 campaign, many expected Philadelphia to take a big step back in the trenches, but that did not happen in 2024, as the Eagles won a Super Bowl thanks much in part to a strong push up front.
Of course, it's still very early in the season, so there is plenty of time for Philadelphia to get things right. And in spite of all the problems the Eagles have had, they are still undefeated and have reeled off three straight wins against teams that made the playoffs last year.
But that being said, in order for Philadelphia to repeat, it is definitely going to have to get some of these issues cleaned up, and perhaps fixing whatever is going on with the offensive line would represent a great start.
It should also be noted that tackle Lane Johnson left the win over the Buccaneers with a shoulder injury, but he seems to be ready to go against the Denver Broncos this Sunday.
