Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts and WR A.J. Brown are "not that close these days," according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
Brown is frustrated with his role even though the Eagles are 4-0.
"Brown and Hurts have a long history," Russini wrote. "High school and college friends turned NFL teammates, Hurts is the godfather to Brown's daughter, Jersee. A former teammate once described them as 'an old married couple,' but I'm told they’re not that close these days.
"Like any friendship, life happens. Family responsibilities, the grind of being pros, shifting priorities. They’re friendly, but as one Eagles player described it: 'It’s functional, professional."
Brown has 14 catches for 151 yards and one touchdown on the season. The 151 yards receiving is the lowest output in a four-game stretch for Brown since he arrived to the Eagles in 2022.
Philadelphia's offense is averaging just 138.0 passing yards per game, the second-fewest in the NFL. Hurts has 609 passing yards and five passing touchdowns.
"Right now, for the Eagles, it's run, run, run, Hurts off-schedule pass, tush push," a league source told Russini. "For their receivers, that means when they get to the red zone, they aren't getting the ball — and they know it. Hence the frustrations."
Some people around the NFL believe the Eagles could look to trade Brown after this season. For now, Hurts and Brown have to figure things out because the odds of Brown getting traded mid-season are very, very low.
Asked about the state of his relationship with Brown on Wednesday, Hurts said, "It's good. We share a great passion for this game and we're focused on this week. You try to play the game, you try to play the position, and you try to go out there and execute, and you approach it that way."
The Eagles face the Denver Broncos in Week 5. Don't be surprised if Hurts targets Brown a lot after the WR took to social media to vent about his frustrations with the offense.
