Justin Fields did not play in the New York Jets' Week 3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he was sidelined with a concussion that he suffered the previous game.
Instead, it was Tyrod Taylor who led the Jets under center, and to be perfectly honest, New York's offense looked a heck of a lot better this past Sunday than it did in Week 2.
That raised a very pressing question for the Jets: should Taylor actually keep his starting job once Fields is ready to play again?
Head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about it after New York's most recent defeat, and he didn't exactly give Fields a ringing endorsement.
“We’ll talk about that today as a staff,” Glenn told reporters. “We’ll make sure we come out with the right answer for that. I know what you’re trying to ask, but we’ll make sure we talk about that as a staff, first and foremost.”
This is definitely concerning news for Fields. If Glenn were 100 percent sure that Fields would be back in the saddle whenever he gets healthy (which could be as soon as next weekend), he would have said so. But now, he just opened the door to a quarterback controversy in the Big Apple.
Fields actually looked really good in the season opener, going 16-for-22 with 218 yards and a touchdown while also carrying the ball 12 times for 48 yards and a couple of scores. But against the Buffalo Bills the following week, Fields was just 3-of-11 for 27 yards before being knocked out of the contest in the fourth quarter.
It was the same type of inconsistency we have seen far too much from the Ohio State product throughout his career, and it's why he is now on his third team since entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick back in 2021.
The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency back in March. The deal features $30 million in guarantees, so New York does have financial incentive to start him. But if Glenn does not feel he is the right man for the job, that won't matter.
In the end, this is probably a moot point, because you have to figure that the Jets, barring a miracle, will be selecting a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft next April given how deep the class is slated to be at the position.
New York will face the Miami Dolphins next Monday.
