New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is not happy, and how could he be? The Jets were absolutely smoked by the Buffalo Bills, 30-10, on Sunday afternoon, dropping them to 0-2 on the season.
Things were supposed to be different for the Jets under Glenn, who experienced considerable success as a defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions from 2021 through 2024 and did a fine job coaching the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs from 2016 through 2020.
But instead, everything looks pretty much the same for New York, a franchise that has the longest-running active playoff drought in football.
After the Jets' Week 2 loss, Glenn delivered a strong message to his players and coaches that should absolutely be construed as a warning.
“I want to take a look at every player and I want to take a look at every coach,” Glenn said, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. “There’s no stone that won’t go unturned without figuring out the issue."
There really was nothing positive to take away from the Jets' loss to the Bills. Justin Fields went just 3-for-11 with 27 yards before exiting the game with a head injury in the fourth quarter (he is now in concussion protocol). New York went 0-for-11 on third downs. The team averaged just 3.3 yards per play. Buffalo nearly doubled the Jets up in time of possession.
It was a frustrating day all around for Gang Green, but Glenn is remaining steadfast.
"But I do know this, I told these guys this, I’ve been here before with two teams, in New Orleans and Detroit. The one thing we’re not going to do, we’re not going to waver, not one bit. Not one bit," the first-year coach added.
The question is, how much patience will the Jets actually have with Glenn? Owner Woody Johnson is known for having a quick trigger finger, and while he certainly won't be firing the former NFL defensive back — who played eight seasons for New York — midway through his inaugural campaign, he is expecting results — fast.
There is still plenty of time for Glenn to get things turned around this season, but based on what we saw from the Jets yesterday, you just can't help but feel that this will be more difficult than Glenn himself likely anticipated.
