The New York Jets swung a surprising trade for Tennessee Titans cornerback Jarvis Brownlee on Tuesday, and all they had to do was pay the cost of a late-round pick swap.
It was a rare win for the Jets, who are 0-3 this season and have not made the playoffs in a decade-and-a-half.
Perhaps taking advantage of another hapless franchise was the way to go for New York, as many are wondering why in the world the Titans made this trade:
Tennessee selected Brownlee in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He proceeded to play in every game during his rookie campaign, registering 75 tackles, an interception and nine passes defended. In two contests this year, he ha logged 17 tackles and one pass defended.
Now, it should be noted that Brownlee has had a problem with penalties. He was flagged three times in the 2025 season opener and has been penalized 19 times overall throughout his brief NFL tenure thus far, but he is still just 24 years old.
A sound tackler, Brownlee registered a 77.7 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus last year, so he could fill quite an interesting niche for the Jets.
New York already has Sauce Gardner as its No. 1 cornerback, but it lost D.J. Reed in free agency and replaced him with Brandon Stephens, who has struggled. At the very least, Brownlee should provide the Jets with some compelling depth.
Gang Green suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past Sunday, falling 29-27 in spite of taking a 27-26 lead late in the fourth quarter after Will McDonald blocked a field goal and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.
The Jets are in their first season under head coach Aaron Glenn, who had previously served as Detroit Lions defensive coordinator. Glenn was also a terrific cornerback during his own playing days, so perhaps he can work with Brownlee and help him improve, especially when it comes to limiting his penalties.
New York will look to snap its losing skid when it takes on the also winless Miami Dolphins next Monday in an AFC East divisional matchup.
