Last year, the New York Jets could have had tight end Brock Bowers in the first round of the NFL Draft, but they elected to roll with offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, which was actually seen as a rather wise move at the time.
After all, the Jets definitely needed a cornerstone tackle, and Fashanu seemed to possess all the makings of becoming one.
Unfortunately, the Penn State product has fallen well short of expectations thus far, and it is starting to become a bit worrisome.
After managing just a 61.2 overall grade in 15 games and seven starts during his rookie campaign, Fashanu has been even worse three contests into his sophomore year, having posted a 53.4 rating. That ranks 72nd out of 101 qualifying tackles.
Now officially in a full-time role, many had Fashanu pegged as a potential breakout player for the Jets this year, but he has been anything but the sort, which Michael Nania of Jets X Factor pointed out in a recent piece.
"Fashanu has allowed 15 total pressures this season. It ranks as the most in the NFL among left tackles and the second-most among all offensive linemen," Nania wrote. "He has also committed three penalties, all of which came in the Week 3 loss to Tampa Bay. This is a step back from the foundation Fashanu established in his rookie year. He allowed just 12 pressures across his six appearances (five starts) at left tackle, along with only three penalties. He has already matched those numbers in half as many games."
Here's the good news: Fashanu is just 22 years old and hasn't even played a full season yet, so there is plenty of time for him to get himself straight. The problem is that New York anticipated that the youngster would be further along than he actually is right now.
"While his peaks have been high, Fashanu has been far too inconsistent. In Week 3, Buccaneers edge rusher Yaya Diaby frequently used his speed to burn Fashanu," Nania added.
The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Fashanu is certainly an impressive physical specimen, and the Jets also have rookie tackle Armand Membou on the other side of the line. Both of them are expected to be franchise cornerstones for Gang Green.
But it would be nice to see Fashanu start cementing his status as a key piece sooner rather than later.
