Could the New York Jets actually swing a trade with one of their most hated rivals?

The New York Jets have gotten off to an 0-3 start this season, so they definitely need help in a variety of areas. Could they potentially trade to make a trade in an attempt to salvage their campaign?

Bleacher Report's Alex Kay thinks the Jets might make a move and suggests that they actually call up the Miami Dolphins to discuss a deal for edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. More specifically, Kay proposes that New York sends a fourth-round draft pick to the Dolphins in exchange for him.

"While Gang Green hasn't been perfect on offense, the team has put up 27 or more points in two of its three games," Kay wrote. "The defense hasn't been nearly as consistent and must take some desperate measures to improve if this club wants any chance at saving the season. Trading for Jaelan Phillips could help the Jets find some stability. Although the Miami Dolphins' 2021 first-rounder has had issues with consistency and injuries during his brief tenure in the pros, he's currently healthy and possesses undeniable upside."

Phillips was very good over his first couple of seasons, racking up 42 tackles and 8.5 sacks during his rookie campaign and then registering 61 tackles and seven sacks in Year 2.

Unfortunately, the University of Miami product played in a grand total of 12 games between 2023 an 2024, and with Phillips now in the final year of his contract and Miami being 0-3, the Dolphins may decide to jettison him before the trade deadline.

The 26-year-old has logged nine tackles thus far in 2025, but hasn't recorded a single quarterback hit. Would the Jets really give up a fourth-rounder for him then, especially when he can just walk in free agency next March?

New York has a couple of good edge rushers already in Will McDonald and Jermaine Johnson, although, like Phillips, Johnson just can't seem to stay healthy. In fact, Johnson and Phillips have both suffered torn Achilles injuries in the past.

It seems rather unlikely that the Jets would want to take a chance on another injury-prone pass rusher, particularly at that price.
