After the New York Jets got their first win of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals, QB Justin Fields emotionally opened up while speaking to reporters.
It was a tough week for Fields, who was called out by Jets owner Woody Johnson and benched by head coach Aaron Glenn last week against the Carolina Panthers.
Fields played very well against the Bengals. He went 21-32 through the air for 244 yards and one touchdown.
The Ohio State product also had 31 rushing yards on 11 carries.
The Jets were going to start Tyrod Taylor this week, but the veteran is dealing with a knee injury, so Glenn turned back to Fields, who converted two clutch two-point conversions in the fourth quarter to help New York stun Cincinnati on the road.
Fields and Co. outscored the Bengals 23-7 in the fourth quarter. It's remarkable how well Fields played, considering Johnson bashed him on Tuesday.
"You know, it's hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that we've got," Johnson said on Tuesday. "He has ability, but something is just not jiving. But if you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you're going to see similar results across the league. You have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do.
"I just think defense, special teams are doing better. Defense is pretty good. If we could just complete a pass, it would look good. We got to complete some passes."
Fields is now 15-36-0 as a starter in the NFL with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and Jets. He still hasn't thrown an interception this season.
The Jets have next week off before taking on the Cleveland Browns in Week 10. Fields is expected to start against the Browns after beating the Bengals.
Fields has thrown for 1,089 yards this season and five touchdowns. He also has three rushing touchdowns for the Jets, who are now 1-7.
