The New York Jets are 0-3 heading into their Monday night matchup against the Miami Dolphins in a battle of winless teams.
Even if the Jets emerge with a victory in South Beach, it won't exactly say much for New York, which is not expected to contend for a playoff spot this season.
As a result, some feel that the Jets could potentially sell off some pieces between now and the November trade deadline, and Josh Weil of Pro Football Network has zeroed in on running back Breece Hall in that regard.
"When a coach has a bell-cow type of back like Hall and wants to utilize all of the team’s options, that tells me the team is looking for one of the backup options to play their way into a role without the pressure of the workload," Weil wrote. "It also tells me that Hall now knows that he won’t be the focal point of the run game, so it makes a reunion in free agency less likely."
As Weil noted, Hall is in the final year of his contract, and Jets head coach Aaron Glenn stressed during the offseason that New York wanted to use fellow running backs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis throughout 2025. That being said, Hall has seen the bulk of the work thus far, carrying the ball 38 times for 157 yards. Meanwhile, Allen and Davis have combined for 16 attempts.
"Of course, trading Hall would be a tough pill to swallow for the Jets, but with a number of teams desperate to get their running game right, they could get a really nice return for a guy they were going to lose at the end of the year anyway," Weil concluded.
Hall has actually been a disappointment for New York. The former second-round pick rushed for 994 yards and five touchdowns while logging 4.5 yards per tote during his second season, which had many expecting a breakout campaign from him in 2024. Unfortunately, Hall registered 876 yards and five scores on just 4.1 yards per carry last year.
The one big benefit of Hall is his pass-catching acumen. He hauled in 76 receptions in 2023 and caught 57 more passes last season, so he could certainly bring some versatility to a contending team's backfield.
If the Jets can get a decent return for Hall before the deadline, they will probably explore a trade, and it would not be the least bit surprising if the 24-year-old finishes the 2025 campaign in a different uniform.
