The New York Giants laid a smackdown on the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night, coming away with a 34-17 win. While Jaxson Dart and the offense generated most of the headlines, the Giants' defense also looked rather impressive.
The defensive front applied consistent pressure on Jalen Hurts (Brian Burns added two more sacks to his growing collection), the linebackers looked comfortable and the secondary did a very solid job for most of the night (aside from a couple of busted coverages that Hurts didn't capitalize on).
Perhaps one of the biggest keys for New York's defensive backfield was abandoning its "rotation" between Cor'Dale Flott and Deonte Banks at the No. 2 cornerback slot, with Banks playing a grand total of three defensive snaps in the victory. It definitely paid off, with Flott securing a massive red-zone interception in the second half that led to a Giants touchdown.
Prior to Week 6, however, head coach Brian Daboll was alternating between Flott and Banks at the position, and even though Big Blue mostly stuck with Flott against the Eagles, Daboll hinted at the rotation returning, via Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post.
Hopefully, Dunleavy is correct and Daboll isn't being entirely seriously in his declaration. That's not to disrespect Banks, either. It's just that Flott has played very well this season and has absolutely earned the starting job.
The catch is that Banks is a former first-round pick who actually flashed some potential during his rookie campaign in 2023, but has declined considerably since then.
Banks has registered a 42.8 coverage grade at Pro Football Focus this season, which ranks 142nd out of 169 qualifying cornerbacks. So, yeah; not good.

Meanwhile, Flott — a 2022 third-round selection — owns a very respectable 72.2 coverage grade, which places him 25th in the NFL.
The Giants finally put together a complete performance on Thursday evening, and the defense was a big part of that. It would be outrageous for Daboll to then resume New York's previous arrangement where Banks was taking playing time away from the clearly superior.
Let's just hope cooler heads prevail as Big Blue prepares for the Denver Broncos in Week 7.
