The New York Giants have not exactly gotten off to the most auspicious start this season, as they are 0-3 heading into their Week 4 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Considering that the Giants went 3-14 last year, their slow start should not come as too much of a surprise, but it's still rather discouraging given all of the moves New York made to improve during the offseason.
If the Giants continue trending in this direction (and have you seen their schedule?), they seem likely to sell off some pieces ahead of the November trade deadline. But could Big Blue actually look to add something?
Josh Weil of Pro Football Network explores the possibility, linking New York to a potential deal for Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford.
"Last year, we saw what Jerome Ford could do backing up Nick Chubb, and with 5.4 yards per carry, I am pretty confident that Ford can still ball. However, it is a new season, and with Quinshon Judkins cleared and on the field, Ford caught four passes but didn’t carry the ball once," Weil wrote. "Getting a return on an asset that is falling out of favor is just good business, and the Browns could use some of that right now. "
Yes, Ford averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2024, but it was on a rather small sample size, and with a larger workload in 2023, he managed just four yards per attempt.
The 26-year-old is slated to hit free agency at the end of this season, and with the Giants having just drafted Cam Skattebo (one of the team's few bright spots thus far) and also having Tyrone Tracy, the chances of New York surrendering an asset for a backup halfback seem very slim.
Sure, Tracy is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, but he will be returning at some point this season. But even if he weren't, the Giants have both Skattebo and Tracy under team control for the foreseeable future. Why trade a draft pick for another running back then?
If New York is going to make a move somewhere to improve the offense, it should either be along the offensive line or in its receiving corps. The backfield is not an area that is desperate for a change at the moment.
