Russell Wilson told reporters that he won't request a trade or release from the New York Giants after getting benched for rookie Jaxson Dart.
However, according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Wilson is expected to emerge as a trade candidate prior to the deadline on November 4.
Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Giants in the offseason after playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. The 10-time Pro Bowler threw for 778 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions for New York against the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs, going 0-3.
"I met both with Russ yesterday and Jaxson privately, and Russ was nothing but a pro, which is what I would expect him to be," Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. "It's my decision. We're going with Jaxson. We're going to get him ready to play this week and the remainder of the season. He's going to do everything he can. Russ will be the backup."
Wilson has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Steelers and Giants. He has 46,913 passing yards, 353 passing touchdowns, 5,556 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns in the NFL.
The 36-year-old Wilson won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seahawks against the Broncos. The QB also lost Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots.
Wilson was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, which is why many pundits believe the Cincinnati Bengals should trade for him since Joe Burrow could miss the rest of the season. He's not as talented as he used to be, but Wilson can still throw a good deep ball and the Bengals have two of the top wideouts in the league in Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
It will be fascinating to see if Wilson gets traded or remains with the Giants as the No. 2 quarterback behind Dart, who makes his first start against the Los Angeles Chargers.
