The New York Giants are aiming to pick up their first win of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, and the Chiefs are looking to get in the win column themselves.
Can the Giants actually do this? Can they actually upset Kansas City in their home opener?
While there are actually some who are picking Big Blue to win this game, it just seems very unlikely that New York will be able to do it.
I hope I'm wrong. I genuinely do. The Giants definitely showed signs of life against the Dallas Cowboys last weekend, but you kind of get the feeling that was the game they had to get over these first three weeks here. Had they actually beaten the Cowboys, I might be more inclined to pick them over the Chiefs. But they didn't.
New York has given us no reason to believe that it can top Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes facing a must-win scenario. These aren't your father's Giants. This is a franchise that has made the playoffs just twice since 2012 and is always finding new ways to lose.
Not that the Chiefs have looked good this season. They haven't. Their defense has looked vulnerable, and their offense has been pretty anemic. That's especially with Rashee Rice and now Xavier Worthy sidelined. But Kansas City still has a Super Bowl pedigree. The Giants have nothing of the sort.
Now, if Russell Wilson is able to put together another vintage performance like he did in Week 2, then yes; New York has a shot. But will he actually have the wherewithal to achieve that against a Steve Spagnuolo-led defense? It remains to be seen.
The Giants aren't expected to contend for a playoff spot this year anyway, so a loss here wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But for the Chiefs? A loss could represent an essential death knell to their dynasty, especially with the Baltimore Ravens looming in Week 4.
Maybe the G-Men will prove me wrong and blitz Mahomes and Co. right out of the gate on Sunday evening. But again, the Giants have given me no reason to believe that they can actually win games like this in 2025.
The Chiefs will probably win this game, and a convincing victory for Kansas City would not shock me in the slightest, regardless of how poorly the team has played thus far.
