There has been a lot of talk so far this season about what the Green Bay Packers haven't done well in their 3-1-1 start. It makes sense, too. This team has Super Bowl aspirations and those were doubled, if not tripled, by the addition of star pass-rusher Micah Parsons before the season began.
Winning a Super Bowl is not easy. You need to be healthy, you need to be lucky, but you also have to be good at what you do. The Packers have looked disjointed at times this season, and head coach Matt LaFleur recently admitted that his team has yet to play a complete game.
That needs to change if the Packers want to be true contenders, but let's not pretend that everything is going wrong in Packer Land. In fact, many things are going right.
One of those huge positives is tight end Tucker Kraft, who is quickly proving to be one of the best tight ends not just in the NFC, but in the entire NFL.
So far this season, Kraft has caught 18 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. In 2024, he caught 50 passes for 707 yards and seven touchdowns, and he's on pace for 61 receptions, 911 yards, and 10 touchdowns this season.
That's elite tight end play, and it's not even mentioning Kraft's "secret weapon", which is his ability to pick up yards after the catch.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did the research and found out that among qualifying tight ends, Kraft is No. 1 in average yards per catch (14.9) as well as No. 1 in yards after the catch per game (36.4).
"Every time I catch the ball, that’s what I’m thinking, break the tackle," Kraft explained this week, per Silverstein.
Kraft simply does not go down easily after he gets the football, and he has a 6-foot-5, 259-pound frame to back that mindset up.
That's a mindset that Matt LaFleur and the Packers are undoubtedly hoping catches on with this offense. We know running back Josh Jacobs brings it each and every single time he touches the ball, and he can Kraft combined may be the best offensive YAC combo in the league from a weapons standpoint.
It's more than just about the physicality, though. It's about the desire to run through a defender and finish the play strong. That's something the Packers could use more of, because in a roundabout way, that could leak into their mindset when it comes to closing out games.
That's something that has been a problem at times this season, so hopefully a player like Kraft can help set the tone for this team as the weather gets colder and the games continue to get more and more important from a playoff standpoint.
