Last winter, it was looking like Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young had finally turned a corner, leading the Panthers to a 2-1 record over their final three games in 2024 while throwing for seven touchdowns and rushing for three. He also didn't commit any turnovers.
But now, here we are in 2025, and that old familiar feeling has returned.
Young has struggled over the first four games of the season, so much so that there has been some debate as to whether or not he could be benched for Andy Dalton ... again.
The former No. 1 overall pick has thrown for 753 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 60.4 percent of his passes and posting a 77.1 passer rating, and he has finished with well under 200 passing yards in three of his four contests.
So, could the end be near for Young?
Saad Yousuf of The Athletic thinks so, particularly if the 24-year-old doesn't get himself right against a very easy upcoming schedule.
"It was a tough look with C.J. Stroud’s quick success in the NFL but Carolina hasn’t exactly fostered the best environments for quarterbacks in recent years. Just ask Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, both of whom found success after leaving the Panthers," Yousuf wrote. "Maybe the same happens for Young, but it’s getting tougher in Year 3 to build a case for him. However, his next two weeks are against a bad Miami Dolphins defense and literally the worst defense in the NFL in the Cowboys. If Young doesn’t get right in these games, that might be it, at least in Carolina."
Young had a rough rookie campaign in 2023, totaling 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 picks. He followed that up by posting 2,403 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 14 games and 12 starts last year. Was he better in 2024? Sure, but he certainly wasn't great, and he was even benched early in the year.
If Young continues to struggle this season, the Panthers may be forced to move on, especially considering that the 2026 NFL Draft class is slated to be loaded with quarterback talent.
We'll see if the University of Alabama product can right the ship.
