The Carolina Panthers rallied for a 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday thanks much in part to a breakout performance from running back Rico Dowdle, who racked up 206 yards and a touchdown with Chuba Hubbard sidelined.
The Panthers signed Dowdle in free agency, hoping he would provide Carolina with a nice supplementary piece in the backfield. Things weren't going too well for Dowdle over the first four weeks, but he certainly made his mark in Week 5.
Last year, Dowdle rattled off 1,079 yards and a couple of scores with the Dallas Cowboys, but the Cowboys opted not to re-sign him during the offseason.
Now, Dowdle will get to face his former Dallas squad next Sunday, and he is prepared to exact some vengeance on his old mates.
“They’ve got to buckle up. I think they know for sure,” Dowdle said, via Joseph Person of The Athletic. “I’d been there five years. They didn’t keep me there for five years for no reason. I’m looking forward to playing those guys next week.”
The 27-year-old came close to breaking DeAngelo Williams' single-game Panthers rushing record of 210 yards, but cramps forced him to the sideline for seven plays in the fourth quarter.
“If I didn’t leave with cramps, I definitely would have got it,” Dowdle added. “But you know, get another opportunity to do it again.”
Dowdle went undrafted in 2020, but signed with the Cowboys as a free agent. He barely saw the field over his first three years, finally getting some shine in 2023 when he registered 361 yards while reaching the end zone twice. He then established himself as a consistent threat in 2024, also hauling in 39 receptions for 249 yards and three touchdowns in addition to his rushing output.
Dallas is allowing 127.4 rushing yards per game this season, so Dowdle may once again be in for a big performance against his former team. Of course, how much Dowdle plays also depends on whether or not Hubbard, who is battling a calf injury, returns in Week 6.
Either way, you can bet that Dowdle will be extra motivated when the Cowboys come to town next Sunday, and for Carolina, it's a huge opportunity to get back to .500 and actually insert itself into the NFC playoff picture.
