The Las Vegas Raiders have had a disappointing 2025 season that has failed to meet the expectations fans had coming into the year. Quarterback Geno Smith has certainly been a big factor in the team’s underwhelming season, being named the Raiders’ most disappointing player in 2025 in a recent Bleacher Report article.
Though tight end Brock Bowers has had a noticeable down year from his very impressive rookie season, Smith’s first year in the silver and black takes the cake.
“It's obviously disappointing that Brock Bowers has yet to score in his sophomore season, but a knee injury is a factor there,” B/R’s Brent Sobleski wrote in the article. “Also, his expensive new quarterback has seven touchdown passes to a tied-for-league-high 10 interceptions. The experiment has failed.”
Smith joined Las Vegas back in March after being traded for a third-round pick from the Seattle Seahawks. It was expected that Smith could come in and immediately lead the Raiders to a winning season and possibly even sneak into the playoffs. Evident by their 2-5 record through seven weeks, it has been anything but a success for Smith in a Raiders uniform.
His Raiders tenure got off to a promising start, throwing for 362 yards in a Week 1 win against the New England Patriots. Since then, however, it’s been impossible to ignore how poorly Smith has been for Las Vegas. He’s thrown seven touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions, tied with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for the most in the NFL. Each week, he’s told reporters he needs to clean it up and be more efficient, but his play hasn’t shown any improvement week after week.
Though it was his first week without an interception, Week 7 was one of the lowest points yet for Smith. He threw just 10 completions for 67 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. His 7.8 QBR performance was enough for the 35-year-old to get benched at the end of the game in favor of Kenny Pickett. Heading into a bye week, some Raiders fans are calling for Smith to remain on the bench, as it clearly isn’t working with him under center.
Head coach Pete Carroll will have a lot of questions to answer and tough conversations to have in the coming week. It’s expected that Smith will be back as the quarterback in Week 9, but the patience of fans is growing thinner and thinner with each throw. He hasn’t been worth anywhere near the value of his two-year, $75 million extension. Good news for Raiders fans is that it really can only get better from here.
