Rodgers looked old and tired on Sunday night in what had otherwise been a solid first season with the Steelers. However, he shrugged off the idea that fatigue is settling in at the midway point of the season.
"I feel good," Rodgers said after the Steelers lost 25-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. Then, for emphasis said, "I feel good."
Rodgers and the offense looked lethargic throughout the game. Chris Boswell kicked a 59-yard field goal to cap the Steelers' first possession. The Chargers then scored 25 unanswered points before Rodgers threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson with 2:57 remaining to close the scoring.
"It's just sometimes in the game, when it's just not going (well), it's just one of those days where we just couldn't quite get over the hump and get some first downs," Rodgers said.
The Steelers (5-4) did not convert a third down until the fourth quarter. They were 2 for 11 in those situations, which led to the Chargers (7-3) holding a considerable 37:35-22:25 advantage in time of possession. And it isn't easy to score when you don't have the ball.
Rodgers had a season-worst 50.8 passer rating, completing 16 of 31 attempts for 161 yards. He was also intercepted twice and sacked by linebacker Khalil Mack for a safety in the first quarter that opened the Chargers' scoring.
The Steelers lost for the third time in four games. Their lead in the AFC North is down to one game over the Baltimore Ravens (4-5), who are on a three-game winning streak.
"I expect to play great every single week, and this was not my best performance," Rodgers said. "I got to play better than this for us to win. Whatever it takes, if it's better checks, if it's better throws, whatever it is, I got to play better. I will.
"I feel like we were just kind of struggling a little bit, couldn't get a play to get going. We always say, 'We just get a first down, we score on that drive.' We had so many three and outs, and we hurt ourselves with a couple penalties."
