The duo played together with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-21. Those were Valdes-Scantling's first four seasons in the NFL after being drafted in the fifth round from South Florida.
Rodgers now has a reunion with Valdes-Scantling, who was signed to the Steelers' practice earlier in the week. He was released by the San Francisco 49ers after five games this season, notching four receptions for 40 yards.
Valdes-Scantling had 123 receptions during his four seasons with the Packers for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns. Valdes-Scantling averaged 17.5 yards a catch during that span and topped the NFL in that category with a 20.3 mark in 2020. Though Valdes-Scantling is 31, Rodgers believes his former teammate will still be productive despite his less-than-impressive statistics with the 49ers.
"I can translate the offense we ran in Green Bay for a number of years into this offense," Rodgers said Wednesday during his weekly media availability. "He's a smart guy. He's played a lot of football, been around a long time, been productive, so I'm sure he'll pick it up pretty quick."
Rodgers is also confident that Valdes-Scantling will immediately fit into the Steelers' locker room culture.
"I was telling Marquez there are no bad apples in here," Rodgers said. "There's nobody you worry about, nobody with consistent late issues or team-rule issues. Not that there's a lot of rules in general. But, nah, there's a bunch of good guys here that care about each other and play for each other."
The Steelers could use more depth at wide receiver, so it was somewhat surprising that general manager Omar Khan did not make a move before Tuesday's trade deadline. However, Rodgers says he is good with a receiver group that includes starters DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III, as well as reserves Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, and Ke'Shawn Williams.
"That's a lot of outside talk," Rodgers said of the complaints about the Steelers' wide receiver situation. "You got to look at the way we're playing and the personnel groupings that we like. We're a multi-personnel team. We run a lot of guys out there. We're not a big three-receiver team in general.
"And Calvin's (Austin) come back (from a shoulder injury) and played really well for us. Roman's (Wilson) been more consistent. So, there was probably more noise outside of the facility than maybe inside the facility."
