However, the Steelers did add a receiver. They signed veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling as a free agent and added him to the practice squad.
The question is whether Valdes-Scantling has anything left to help the Steelers. Valdes-Scantling's biggest plus is that he has familiarity with Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as they played together with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-21. In his first four NFL seasons, Valdes-Scantling had 123 receptions for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns and led the league with an average of 20.9 yards in 2020.
However, the 31-year-old Valdes-Scantling has bounced around to four teams in the four seasons since he left the Packers as a free agent, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, and San Francisco 49ers from 2021-25. During that time, Valdes-Scantling has 86 catches for 1,453 yards and seven TDs.
Valdes-Scantling has never been a high-volume receiver, with his career high being 42 receptions with the Chiefs in 2022. However, Valdes-Scantling is still a big-play threat, as evidenced by his 21.6-yard-per-catch average last season with the Bills and Saints, albeit on just 19 receptions.
This season, Valdes-Scantling provided limited production to the 49ers. In five games, he had four receptions for 40 yards. Rodgers advocated last week for the Steelers to sign Valdes-Scantling, though.
"He is a really special guy, and I think MVS can still really play," Rodgers said. "You saw last year when he was in New Orleans, he had opportunities. He had a lot of big touchdowns. He can still run."
Five Steelers wide receivers have had receptions this season, with DK Metcalf, acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in an offseason trade, leading the team with 29 receptions for 467 yards and five touchdowns. Metcalf is easily the Steelers' most productive wide receiver, ahead of Calvin Austin III (19-223-2), Roman Wilson (9-114-1), Ben Skowronek (2-35-1), and Scotty Miller (1-9-0).
The Steelers did not make any trades on Tuesday. However, they did acquire strong safety Kyle Dugger last week, and he wound up starting and playing a key role in the Steelers defeating the NFL-best Indianapolis Colts 27-20 on Sunday and holding Jonathan Taylor, the league's leading rusher, to 45 yards on 14 carries.
