Whatever the veteran defensive back said worked as the Steelers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 27-20 victory over the NFL-best Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. It may be the equivalent of football's Gettysburg Address based on the way the Steelers' defense played after back-to-back awful performances.
The Colts (7-2) scored just two touchdowns despite entering the game as the league leaders in scoring and total offense. Jonathan Taylor, the league's leading rusher, managed just 45 yards in 14 carries.
That performance came less than 24 hours after Ramsey made his remarks at the team hotel. It was quite a turnaround by the Steelers (5-3), who ranked 30th in total defense, having given up 68 points and 924 total yards in their previous two losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers.
"I noticed that something kind of changed (Saturday) night when Jalen spoke," Rodgers said after Sunday's game. "It's not easy to speak in front of the team, even when you're a player. It's unnatural. Coaches are used to it. They do it every day. Mike (Tomlin) is fantastic about it. Jalen went on and on. Had the attention in the room.
"He said good stuff. I'm not going to get into it. It's kind of need-to-know information. It was meaningful to me on the offensive side. I felt like we had a different energy in the locker room. All week, I don't pay super tight attention to that side of the ball in practice. In the locker room pregame, there was a different energy for us. They played really well."
Ramsey is in his first season with the Steelers after being acquired from the Miami Dolphins in a trade during the offseason. Ramey is a four-time All-Pro cornerback but has been willing to play everywhere in the secondary for the Steelers.
On Sunday, Ramsey started at free safety because the Steelers were missing three defensive backs due to injury or illness -- DeShon Elliott, Chuck Clark, and Jabrill Peppers. Ramsey made five solo tackles.
"I can't say enough about Jalen," Tomlin said. "He does anything and everything we require him to do. We needed him to play exclusively free safety today. He did it and did it at a high level. I'm glad he's on our team."
