When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers in free agency, everyone know it would only be a one-year thing. Rodgers is 41 years old, and while he clearly can still play, he is definitely not the same MVP-caliber quarterback we saw during his Green Bay Packers days.
The question is, what will the Steelers do for the future?
Pittsburgh does not currently have an heir to Rodgers on its roster. The Steelers did draft Will Howard in the sixth round back in April, but it seems hard to imagine that Howard will be the long-term answer moving forward.
Fortunately for Pittsburgh, the 2026 NFL Draft class is slated to be loaded with talent at the quarterback position, and perhaps one of the more intriguing under-the-radar prospects is Arizona State star Sam Leavitt.
The Steelers apparently had reps scouting Leavitt during Arizona State's win over TCU on Friday night, and Leavitt certainly did not disappoint, going 27-for-39 with 291 yards and a couple of touchdowns while also carrying the ball 13 times for 56 yards and a score.
On the season overall, Leavitt has thrown for 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns and three picks, completing 63.1 percent of his passes. Additionally, he has rushed for 275 yards and five scores.
Leavitt actually got off to a rather rough start in 2025, particularly in Week 2 against Mississippi State when he went 10-for-22 with 82 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Since then, however, the redshirt sophomore seems to have righted the ship.
While Leavitt's name may not carry the cachet of an Arch Manning or a LaNorris Sellers, there are some who feel that the 20-year-old could potentially be a first-round pick next spring.
Leavitt began his collegiate career at Michigan State in 2022, but transferred to Arizona State after just one year. During his debut campaign with the Sun Devils, the 6-foot-2 signal-caller totaled 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 61.7 percent of his throws and tallying 443 yards and five scores om the ground.
This is the second time the Steelers have scouted Leavitt this season, as they also were in attendance for his Week 1 showing against Northern Arizona on Aug. 30.
